The air we breathe is an increasingly rare and precious commodity: here's what Fiam is doing to reduce emissions into the atmosphere

The pollution problem is a phenomenon not limited to our country, and one that affects us all closely: just think, approx. 4,000 Italians lose their lives each year as a result of the high concentration of pollutants in the air! It represents both a problem and a responsibility for the individual inhabitant and large industries alike. It's precisely these industrial concerns that realize the correct relationship between technological innovation and ecology is a balance that has mostly yet to be struck and see "sustainable development" as a goal to strive towards. Concepts that Fiam has always shown it doesn't underestimate and that have been rewarding to the company over the years. In this sense, the company has chosen solutions, even in its production processes, that prove the most effective in reconciling production requirements with the need to protect the environment, both in general terms and in relation to the physical context in which the production unit is set. The fact that Fiam had its Environmental Management system accredited to ISO 14001 back in 1998 is no coincidence. More specifically, with the air we all breathe in mind, Fiam has made two strategic decisions, managing to drastically reduce emissions into the atmosphere for years and contributing, albeit on a small scale, to improving air quality. The first fundamental decision was to use a closed-circuit washer for its mechanical components, where the solvent used is mostly recycled by means of a special condenser and distiller: this has actually meant that the resulting emission falls into what the law defines as the "low atmospheric pollution emission" category. The result achieved is monitored and confirmed each year by fume analyses, too, which Fiam performs through a trusted laboratory. Again with a view to encouraging more breathable air, Fiam has stopped using the furnace that it once employed for in-house heat treatments for hardening metal components: despite being a controlled stage, the high temperatures reached by the components' cooling oil triggered processes in the basic hydrocarbon molecules, releasing fragments indicated not as possible causes of pollution, but as generating unpleasant smells. Fiam's decision was clear and absolute: all heat treatments were transferred to a specialized independent supplier whose high technology not only assures environmental respect but also results in improved quality of the treatments in question. These are tangible examples that show how the management undertaken by Fiam in the pursuit of "compatible development" translates into an advantage for the environment as well as improvement of the company system in terms of quality and economics.
