A new Fiam solution to tighten components for domestic and industrial door and window frames

To assemble M5 grubs on accessories for domestic and industrial window and door frames: to the new demand made by a Fiam customer, the company responded with a solution full of advantages. The first problem to solve was to design a solution that took into consideration the extremely tiny dimensions of the components and grubs; in addition, it had to be able to improve the high production capacity by introducing the right ergonomic expedients for the operator. All the customer’s requirements were met to the full with Fiam’s solution and in particular:

  • it guarantees even greater comfort for the operator as well as maximum safety thanks to a work bench that observes all the ergonomic principles
  • it speeds up production cycles notably thanks to the flexibility of the machine which adapts to the different types of accessories
  • it improves considerably on tightening quality because the system ensures constant control and reliability of the assembly operations

This is the work station designed and implemented by Fiam
The work bench has the following features:

  • the aluminium structure is lightweight and easy to transport
  • the leg stems have an anti-vibration system
  • the standing base has several holes for bracketing the different assembly types of the component to be mounted
  • lateral  accident prevention guards that prevent access to the system
  • the work bench has a rear access door to load the grubs into the vibrating bowl

The fastening slide has dual movement with depth control. It is also fitted with ball-recirculating runners, magnetic cylinders with hydraulic decelerators, limit switch position sensors and couplings with flow governor.

The air nutrunner motor, housed in the slide, is fitted with accessories and a pneumo-electric transducer

The grub selection unit includes a circular feeder and an electronic vibrations controller

Festo pneumatic components are used

This is how the work cycle proceeds
START
The operator puts manually the component on the assembly template and, with both hands, turns the start knobs: the tightening process starts in maximum safety for the operator.

TIGHTENING CYCLE
The tightening operation is carried out automatically by the air nutrunner motor with Jointech Plus automatic air shut off.  The motor is automatically fed by grubs through a circular feeder combined with the grub selection unit.
For assembly process requirements, the Allen grub, must only be placed by the component to assembled and its correct position is then read by a proximity sensor.
The dual movement slide, that houses the motor, moves down onto the component and it is equipped with  pneumo-electric transducer which controls the interruption of the pneumatic signal at the end of tightening and by the annular sensor  that  controls passage of the grub.

UNLOADING THE PIECE
At the end of the cycle, the system signals – with a red and green light – if the operation was a success or not; the operator can then unload the piece and proceed to the new work cycle.
